Mbam lauds Gov. Umahi’s defection move to APC – By Reginald Okoro (Abakaliki)

Gov. Dave Umahi: Ready to dump PDP this week

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi state,  and Chairman, Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Chief Elias Mbam, has applauded Governor Dave Nweze Umahi’s decision to join the APC.

Mbam made the commendation in an interview with newsmen on Monday in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital.

He spoke against the backdrop of the meeting held between the governor and major stakeholders of the party on Sunday at Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state.

The meeting was part of preparatory arrangements for the governor’s defection to APC.

Mbam said that the decision was a welcome development,  adding that Ebonyi, South-East and the Igbo nation would benefit from the move.

He regretted that the South-East has nothing to show for the zone’s support for People’s Democratic Party (PDP) since the inception of the present democracy in 1999.

Mbam noted that APC-led federal government has shown commitment to the infrastructural development of the South-East in its less than six years as a ruling party, adding that it is time the zone move to APC en-masse.

“The major stakeholders of our party met with the governor and he told us why he wants to leave his party for the APC; part of his reasons is the need for South-East to be part of government at the centre.

“He stresses the need for the zone to collaborate with the north and that if we do that, we will be able to get what we have not been able to get since 1999.

“Since 1999, PDP has been in power in Ebonyi and some other South-East states, yet the party has not found one person worthy to fly the flag of the party and we don’t even have hope that that may happen,” Mbam said.

He lamented that the APC controlled central government did not regard the zone as part of the government, hence the need for South-East to join the ruling party in order to become more relevant in the national government.

He said that Ebonyi as a state needed to join the ruling party in order to be present where major decisions were been taken.

He said: “We want to lead a campaign where South-East will become more relevant at the centre; Umahi’s move is a commendable decision, it’s good for our state and Igbo nation.

” The best way to be represented in a meeting is to be present where major decisions are taken and if Ebonyi is not present at the centre, certainly it will affect what we get from there.

“So, being at the centre will enable the actualisation of our fair share; I quite support what he has done, I commend him and I’ll support the move to see that it is realised.”

The RMAFC boss said that Umahi’s defection into APC would also further strengthen the unity of the party in the state and reposition it to capture the governorship seat in 2023.
