The Abia state Independent Electoral Commission, (ABSIEC) has released a timetable and schedule of activities leading to the December 18, 2020 local council election in the state.
The Commission in a statement obtained by SummitNews, said that collection of forms for the election by political parties has been fixed for September 25, while conduct of primaries by political parties including resolution of disputes arising from primaries, has been scheduled to take place from September 21 to October 21, 2020.
The submission of names of candidates to ABSIEC by political parties, will start from October 29, and end on November 12, 2020.
According to the statement, screening of candidates by ABSIEC, will start on Monday, November 16, and end on Friday November 27, 2020, while hearing of appeal/complaints by the Screening Committee, will start on Wednesday December 2, and end on Thursday, December 3, 2020.
The Commission said replacement of unqualified candidates and screening of replaced candidates, will take place on Monday, December 7, 2020, while notice of withdrawal of nomination (if any) by candidates, will start on Tuesday, December 8, and end on Wednesday, December 9, 2020.
The timetable further stipulates that submission of final list/nomination forms by political parties, will take place on Thursday, December 10, 2020, while Friday, November 20, has been fixed for the commencement of public campaign by political parties.
It said that training of permanent staff of the Commission will commence on Monday, November 16, and end on Wednesday, November 18, 2020, while training of ad-hoc staff will commence on Monday, November 30, and end on Friday, December 4, 2020.
According to the Commission, submission of names of polling agents for the election to the electoral officers of the LGA, will commence from Monday, December 7, and end on Friday, December 11, 2020.
It said that return of list of candidates declared qualified to contest election has been slated for Friday, December 11, 2020, while Wednesday, December 16, has been fixed as the last day for campaigns by the various political parties.
The Commission said the Local Council election will take place on Friday, December 18, while results of the elections will be announced on Saturday, December, 19 2020.
According to the Commission, run-off elections (where necessary), will take place on Wednesday, December 24, 2020.
SummitNews recalls that ABSIEC Chairman Prof. Mkpa Agu Mkpa, had earlier announced that the election will hold in all 17 LGAs and 292 wards of the state for the positions of chairmen and councilors.
He urged party leaders to ensure that the prevailing relevant COVID-19 protocols are observed throughout the period leading to the polls, and assured that the Commission on its part will ensure that the polls comply with COVID-19 safety protocols.
Mkpa urged parties to ensure all candidates to be presented meet requirements to avoid disqualification by the Commission.
