Many are feared dead in a road mishap along Akaeze-Ishiagu axis of the busy Okigwe-Afikpo highway in Ebonyi state.
The road crash happened in Akaeze community, in Ivo LGA on Friday at about 4:45 p.m according to an anonymous eye witness from the area.
The source told our reporter that a 608 bus conveying passengers returning from burial in one of the Ebonyi communities plunged into Ezieku river after the driver lost control of the steering due to a dangerous overtake.
“The accident occurred on evening of Friday when an Enugu-bound bus conveying about 36 people returning from a burial ceremony in Ebonyi State attempted to overtake an articulated vehicle just before a bridge in the area.
“The driver lost control of the steering and veered off into the river and got submerged immediately.
“Five persons in critical conditions were reportedly rescued and rushed to the hospital for treatment,” the source said.

Mrs Loveth Odah, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ebonyi Command confirmed the incident describing it as a ‘very unfortunate’ noting that efforts to rescue all the victims were ongoing.
She, however, disclosed that about five persons had so far been rescued from the river.
”It is a very unfortunate incident. The DPO of Ivo Division just told me that about five persons have been rescued and rushed to the hospital while efforts were on to see if other persons can be rescued too.
“Our men are already on ground to see what can be done to help the situation,” Odah said.
