Gov. Ben Ayade: Kinsmen on war path over land compensation

The indigenes of Obudu in Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River state, have taken up arms against the state governor Prof. Ben Ayade, following his refusal to pay adequate compensation for land forcefully acquired to build a cargo airport in the area.

Summit News gathered that Governor Ayade who hails from Obudu, forcefully acquired the land for the cargo airport project, despite his people’s refusal not to part with their land.

One of the houses torched during the rampage

It was learnt that following the governor’s insistence to acquire the land, the people relented on the basis that the government would pay them sufficient compensation for the land.

However, the Ayade-led administration was said to have offered to pay the people peanuts for the land, a development which led the people to go on the rampage.

An eye witness said that several houses of community leaders who allegedly supported the acquisition of the land were burnt down during the rampage.

Much ado over land

Obudu is a local government area and town in Cross River state. The area features a tourist resort, Obudu Cattle Ranch, which hosts an annual mountain running competition called the Obudu Ranch International Mountain Race.

It was gathered that though the government had since acquired the land, there is no sign of any cargo airport project being constructed on the land.
